Traveling To England – Accommodations

A few years back my husband and I met a wonderful couple that we now consider very good friends. He is originally from England but moved to Illinois for a job, met his wife and started his family there. Each year they take a 3 week vacation to go back to England so he can visit with friends and family.

We got on the subject one day about where they stay when they are visiting England. I assumed they stayed with family but he kept rambling on about his caravan. Of course, being from Illinois myself, in my mind I kept picturing something like a mini-van. (I’m sure all of my U.K. visitors and fans are laughing out loud right now). I couldn’t quite understand how they could live in a mini-van for 3 weeks and enjoy it. Me being the person I am, I had to ask and when I did I received quite a learning experience on different accommodations when in the U.K.!

Think of touring caravans as motor homes or a different name for an R.V or a fifth wheel.

  • they make great cost-effective alternatives to vacation houses and hotels
  • you don’t have to bring a lot of luggage since you already have most of what you’ll need in your caravan.
  • you don’t have to try to contend with other guests in the hotel for services
  • you don’t have to spend a lot of money on eating out because it contains a kitchen and everything needed to stay in for a home cooked meal

Caravans can be rented at most caravan parks (aka R.V. Parks), from my understanding, so if you’re planning a trip to the U.K. this is definitely something to look into. I don’t know how the rates compare to renting an R.V. here in the U.S., so if any of our readers do please let us know!  You can also do your research by doing a simple online search, I’m sure there are many different locations as well as caravan models to check out. Most places I’ve seen online will even let you rent them online.

Always be sure to check into caravan insurance as well.. you never know when something will go wrong so you definitely want to be prepared!

Other Accommodations Ideas:

Unique Places – To make your trip a unique experience England also offers some very unique places to stay. For instance you can stay in an actual treehouse (Somerset), a renovated train carriage (Shorpshire), in farmhouses, on boats. There are many different unique places to stay!

Hotels/Motels – These are always an option when traveling, there are many throughout the world.
