Dr.Sue (@TheKidsDoctor) offered some of her expertise during our #SesameSleep Twitter party. You had questions, she has the answers.
@NicoleMomFuse asked – What is the best way to transition my 2-year old from her crib, which she is totally attached to, to a toddler or twin size bed?
Transitioning from crib to bed is usually fairly easy. I wait until the child is older and asks about sleeping in the “big bed” or I moved them when I needed the crib again for a new baby. My son and I were shopping for beds for his new apt the other day and we were talking about buying his “first bed” which happened to be a blue metal bunk bed. He was about 2 years old with a new baby due in several months, so we took him shopping with us. Such a fun day, let him try out some beds, talked about being “big boy” and how special and lucky he was to get his own bed. After that we went to Target and despite the fact that I thought he should have plain white sheets (guess that comes from my mother!) we let him go to the kids aisle and pick out his favorite sheets which at the time were Sesame Street. He just loved those sheets and I think they were used until they literally fell apart or he decided he was ready to trade up for Power Rangers.
When presented in this positive way it was an easy transition and we took the crib down (out of site out of mind) and made up the new bed immediately while the excitement was still there. Being “Big” and new milestones that come with it are usually well received by most 2 year olds.
