Teaching Your Children the Fundamentals While Keeping it Fun

As the parent of a young child, it can be challenging to come up with fun and creative ways to teach them basic fundamental skills, such as colors, math, reading, etc. Using entertainment as a tools can make learning fun for children, instead of a chore. There are several examples shown to be effective learning methods for younger children.

There are four main learning styles: auditory, visual, tactile, and kinesthetic. Keeping it simple for children is key, and finding ways to incorporate one or more of these styles will prove most effective. Human beings are tactile creatures, and learn best when they are allowed to interact with their environment. Applying this kinesthetic leaning process with a hands-on experience and multi-sensory activities has proven to be more effective than merely telling them what things are, especially for children that have difficulties focusing.

Try cutting out alphabet shapes from felt or foam material and encourage them to touch them, while saying the names of the letters aloud. You could also teach them their colors by giving them brightly colored blocks, then ask them to build structures, while saying the name of the color. These are engaging ways to teach your kids the basics.

Flash cards are a tried and true method of challenging your child’s memory and increasing their retention. Get colorful flash cards to present them, and have your child say the name of the color. You can also do this with animals or the alphabet. Just make sure that you’re switching up the order because children are really good at repetition learning, and they may not know the colors or letters as well as they remember the order in which they’re presented.

You’ve probably found, even if your child is quite young, they’re good at working with computer systems. This doesn’t have to be a negative. Work with it, and use this generational skill to your child’s advantage. There are different types of software and preschool educational games designed to teach your children all the fundamentals, while making it fun and exciting in video game styles. Though this shouldn’t be the only avenue that is taken for education, it can be an excellent supplement, along with other activities.

Incorporate one or more of these activities into your daily routine, and research other ways that have proven to help children learn. Not every child is the same, and some methods work better than others so make sure that you_re attentive to their specific learning style in order to best prepare them for the road ahead.
