Simple Ideas for a Thoughtful Mothers Day

Mother’s Day is coming up, and many people are wondering what they can do to let their moms know that they care. The good news is that there are plenty of simple ways to let your mom know you love her. You don’t need to do something big or fancy to say, “I love you.”

Indeed, in these tough economic times, sometimes a simple, yet thoughtful, gesture is the best idea. There is no need to get crazy buying jewelry, unless it’s less expensive earring studs or promise rings to compliment another gift, or spending a great deal on a huge flower arrangements. Some of the things you can do, that come from the heart, include:

Go Out to Brunch

A Mother’s Day brunch can be a great way to spend time with your mom. Treat her to a brunch, and you can have the added bonus of buying her a meal. Take your time, though, and have a nice discussion. There is no reason to hurry things along when you are enjoying each others company.

You don’t even have to go out for brunch. Host a Mother’s Day brunch at your home, or go to your mother’s house to prepare it, whichever is most convenient. Plan a menu that includes your mother’s favorite foods, and be sure to spend a couple of hours talking. If your mom likes games, you can play a few. There are plenty of things you can do to enjoy alone time together. If you have siblings, you can all cook together, since she may not have many chances to get you all together.

Skype Your Mom

In some cases, you might live a long way away from your mother. This can disappointing for a mother on Mother’s Day, especially if you are raising her grandchildren. Technology has made it possible to speak with people over long distances with relative ease. Skype is a Skype application that will operate through Mac, PC, or iPhone 4. If you both have Skype and camera access, you can speak to each other for as long as you want.

Grandmas especially love when they can see their children and grandchildren. Have your children make something to show grandma, or prepare some sort of presentation, then, have a nice, long talk with your mom. Skype is a great way to create the atmosphere of chatting together over coffee, even when you are hundreds, or thousands, of miles apart.

The Gift of Time

These two ideas have the common purpose to offer the gift of time. In some ways, it can be harder to give your time than it is to spend money to buy something. Taking time for your mother on Mother’s Day is a precious gift that most moms will appreciate. As your life gets busy, you might not have as much time for your loved ones. Taking time out to devote the day to your mom is a real expression of thoughtfulness and caring.

Whether you visit her, take her to brunch, go for a walk, or use a video chat to connect “face to face”, the fact that you are giving of your precious time is a great way to show your love. And, for most mothers, that is really the best Mother’s Day present.
