Learning Resources has come up with some great games and on of my favorites it’s the Pizza Mania Early Math Game. With Pizza Mania the chef calls out toppings for children to put on and take off their pizzas while helping children reinforce listening, counting and helps them learn early addition and subtraction.
How To Play
- Hand out a pizza to each player
- Chef calls out the order: “Add 3 olives; take away 1 pepperoni”
- After 1 minute, Chef calls out what topping the pizzas should have
- All players with the correct toppings win!
For those who are visual like myself, they’ve even included a video on their website about how to play:
Although our children are just shy of the recommended age (ages 4-7 ) for this game they still love to learn the new toppings. We have the pepperoni and mushrooms downs but we’re still working on the others. We can also count up to five with a little help. As we continue to work with them though I know they’ll love counting the toppings and later on they’ll enjoy adding and subtracting a certain number of toppings.
I love this game not only because it teaches children but also because it’s such a colorful and fun game. Our children always seem to learn better with food related items and having them learn with healthy food items will help instill healthy eating as they grow.
Pizza Mania includes 4 pizzas, 48 toppings (pepperoni, mushrooms, olives and peppers), and talking chef with volume control (the best part for moms!) and requires 3 AA batteries, which are not included. For 2-4 players it has two levels of play and helps support children with self-checking audio.
