Thinking of visiting Chicago? Did you know that in the great city was the start of the “Historic Route 66” and birthplace to mail-order retailing as well as the TV remote? Chicago is full of history, entertainment and diverse dining.
1. The Navy Pier
The Navy Pier was actually designed for shipping and recreational purposes in 1909 and grew from there. During World War I, the Pier which took 2 years to construct housed many different regiments of soldiers and home defense units. Through the years the Pier was widened for different historical uses and now the Midwest’s #1 tourist attraction hosting 50 acres of parks, gardens, fine shops, unique restaurants and fun attractions including a children’s museum, a 15 ft ferris wheel, live music and much more.
2. The Shedd Aquarium
At the Shedd Aquarium you can see the wonders of the water world. From aquatic shows to a journey through the Amazon the Shedd Aquarium has a lot of different water worlds to visit making this a fun family friendly experience.
The Polar Play Zone at the Shedd Aquarium is a play house for kids allowing them to learn about the aquatics while having a blast and jumping into a penguin suite to see how penguins get around in the ice or exploring the Arctics in a kid-sized submarine. There are touch pools where kids can touch the starfish and other touch friendly animals.
3. The House Of Blues
The House of Blues is a music fans dream featuring multi-story complex that houses a restaurant, bar, hotel and concert hall that does live music every night. Well known artists from around the globe and from different genres have played at the House Of Blues and continue to do so making this one place any music fan must visit.
4. Lincoln Park Zoo
Lincoln Park Zoo is a world of wildlife located just minutes north of Chicago, the zoo has been a natural, free oasis for generations. Free and open every day of the year, the zoo has something for everyone. From bushbabies to black rhinos, children young and old will get to meet animals from around the world,visit beautiful gardens and join in on the fun during the zoo’s daily events.
5. The Second City
Ready for a laugh? The Second City opened its doors in December of 1959 as a small cabaret theatre and has grown into one of the most influential and well known comedy theatres in the world. Specializing in sketch comedy and improv The Second City hosts a show 7 nights a week and serves cocktails and food throughout the show.
From improv training to histerical shows, The Second City has produced and still continues to produce some of the best comic talent in the industry, from Mike Myers to Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert to Tina Fey just to name a few.
Those are the places we like to visit while we’re in Chicago. Of course there are many more things to do and maybe I’ll be able to get around to posting about those. Chicago can be a very fun and intriguing place to visit with so many cultures coming together you are sure to find something that peaks your interest.
