Overlooking These Home Maintenance Projects Could Cost You Big

The list of home maintenance tasks a homeowner has to keep up with is extensive. From top to bottom, inside and out, the various parts, structures, and appliances within the home need to be maintained in order to keep working efficiently. With so many things on the list, it can be fairly easy to forget what needs to be done. While overlooking some things may not be a big deal, forgetting the home maintenance tasks on this list will cost you big time.

Home Maintenance

Cleaning the Gutters

Gutter systems are installed on houses as a means of helping rainwaters to wash away from the foundation. When those gutters become clogged, the water isn’t able to travel efficiently. This, in turn, opens a can of worms. Idle bodies of water can draw in pests like mosquitoes, cockroaches, and ants. The puddles settling around your house can cause foundation issues.

To resolve an issue like this you’d have to contact pest control services like Moxie Pest Control to exterminate. Then you’ll have to hire a contractor to make repairs to your home’s foundation.

To avoid such an issue from occurring, it is ideal that you clean the gutters or hire a roofer to complete this task for you at the end of every season. This is especially important in the fall as the leaves can easily obstruct the water’s path.

Servicing Your Heating System

Your heating system works to keep the temperature in the house warm during colder seasons. There are lots of working parts that must be maintained in order to keep it running efficiently. When the heating system isn’t properly maintained, it loses its efficiency causing your energy bills to go through the roof. The system can essentially work so hard that it malfunctions or breaks causing a house fire or the need for a replacement.

As heating systems can set you back several thousand dollars, you don’t want to overlook this home maintenance task. Change the filters every few months, and hire an HVAC contractor to service the system at least once a year. The maintenance contract is a lot more affordable than the cost of a new furnace.

Flushing Your Water Heater

As long as there’s hot water homeowners don’t tend to pay attention to the importance of maintaining the water heater. While it may seem harmless, what you do not realize is that neglecting to do things such as flush your water heater could put your family’s health at risk.

Water heaters have filters that keep heavy metals and other contaminants from reaching your drinking water. However, over time, the heater accumulates sediment that seeps into the water. If you drink or cook with it, you could get really sick.

Your family’s health is something you don’t want to risk. So, be sure that you’re flushing your hot water heater at least once a year. You can easily do this on your own or hire a plumber or HVAC contractor to take care of it for you.

Cleaning Dryer Vents

Having a washer and dryer in your home is convenient. However, if you’re not taking care of it properly it could end up costing you your home, your belongings, and even your life. Dryer vents collect dust, debris, and lint from clothing. If it is not collected on a regular basis, the vent becomes clogged. The next time you try to dry something, the lint and debris could get so hot that it sparks flames and starts a fire.

Not only do you have to regularly clean the lint trap in your dryer but you must also have your vents cleaned out. While people who dry fewer loads of clothes each week will only need to clear their vents once a year, a larger family who washes and dries clothes more frequently should clear the vents at least once every three months.

There’s no denying that there are a ton of things to do in and around your house. However, if you want it to remain a safe and healthy living environment for you and your family it is important to stay on top of things. As you can see from above, neglecting your responsibilities could cost you way more in the end.
