Don’t Send Your Kids to Camp Without Reading This

For many kids, summer is synonymous with camp. Whether your child will be attending a day camp or an overnight camp, camps are always valuable and memorable.  But picking the right camp for your kid can be tough. So many options, and so many things to consider!

Don’t just choose a summer camp to fill the long summer days, choose a program that helps your child to accomplish a goal this summer. A program that helps skills develop and combines learning and fun make summer meaningful.

What are your child’s needs?

Does your kid love sports? Computers? Art?  Do you want him or her to perfect a skill he/she already has, or learn something new? Is overnight camp something your child can handle, or is just a local day camp a better option? Are there any special medical, behavioural, or educational concerns? Create a list of camp “must haves” to help narrow your choices.

Set a budget

While camps and summer are an important part of many kids’ childhood, camps can be very expensive. If finances are a concern, look for day camps run by non-profits and other charitable organizations. There are many camps that offer funding options and send-a-kid-to-camp programs.

Ask around

Though your kids’ interests may be different, referrals from other parents can give you a good idea of a camp’s atmosphere and help you narrow down your options. Create a shortlist of the suggested camps and discuss with your child.

Consider Academics

Academic-style programs keep kids mentally engaged all summer long so that they have an advantage over kids who did not work on academics in the summer. They maintain their learning momentum and get a head start on next year’s learning.  And schoolwork in the summer doesn’t have to be the opposite of summer fun.  Most summer academic camps make fun part of the curriculum.
