Our six year old daughter is into flash cards big time. She loves mixing and matching them, reading, learning math so when we had opportunity to review these Desert Dwellers Flash Cards I knew my daughter would love to check them out. Julie, the creator, was kind enough to send us a set of these cards for this review.
Julie took learning the ABC’s into a fun, kid-friendly look at desert wildlife. I know living in IL we don’t see a lot of wildlife so I liked the fact that these were cards with southwest animals on them and since my daughter loves animals and learning about them she loved these. She was amazed at some of the animals because she’d never seen them before.
The flash cards are two-sided and very colorful! The animals are described in fun ways as well.. for instance a tarantula is described as ‘Fuzzy Wuzzy’ and a vulture is ‘Not A Picky Eater’. Other animals included are a Kangaroo Rat, Mockingbird, and more. My daughter’s favorite is the Xami Hairstreak which is a butterfly that lives int he Rocky canyons.
The cards give lots of good information on each animal. You learn about their habitat, the foods they eat, their size and life cycle and even the months the animals are active. The Xami Hairstreak is active from April – December.
We had a good time going through the cards with the kids. I learned a lot I didn’t know about some of the animals and even found some new animals I never knew existed.
There’s an animal called the Pipevine Swallowtail which is a poisonous butterfly, the reason they are poisonous is from the pipevine they eat as caterpillars. I had no idea there was a such thing as a poisonous butterfly! They look like beautiful creatures but since they are poisonous we’ll stay away from those!
These are so cool for kids. I love the designs, Julie did such an amazing job painting these and the quality of the cards plus all the information you get about each animal is great.
