Choosing A Good Crib Mattress

Ah, so you’ve got the great news that your expecting and now it’s time to start thinking about baby gear and getting a nursery ready along with a million other things that are probably on your mind! One of the most important things when purchasing anything for a child is safety. You want to make sure you have the safest products in your home to keep your little one healty, happy and of course safe.

Speaking of the nursery, the crib is probably the most important thing in the room. Making sure baby has a good safe place to sleep is of the upmost importance and shouldn’t be taken lightly. While choosing a good crib mattress (also known as cot mattress for some of our readers) there are a few simple tips you can follow.

1. Firmness – When shopping for a mattress you want to be sure you are looking at firm mattress. You can push, poke and prod to be sure it’s firm. Quilted vinyl or multiple layers of vinyl will only add to the durability of the mattress.

2. Choose the right size – This should be the first thing you do before even looking. You’ll need to measure the size of the crib to be sure you get the correct size mattress. Most cribs are the same size but some may be different. Purchasing the crib first will make it easier for you when it comes to finding the right sized mattress.

3. Choose the mattress type. There are few different types of mattress out there so you’ll want to be sure you know which kind you’d like before you start shopping.

Foam vs Coils/Spring. It is really a matter of preference in this area because both are going to be equally safe, although the foam style may be a little more affordable and a little lighter as far as weight is concerned. A lighter mattress will be easier on you when you moving the mattress itself or changing the sheets. You still want to stick with firm mattress either way you go.

I would recommend doing research on baby mattresses just so you can be prepared to start shopping and know what what you’re looking for.

One of thing you’ll want to keep mind is cost. You’ll need to set a budget of how much you can afford to spend and go from there. Nursery items can get very expensive so make a list of everything you need along with the price and budget it in.
