5 Useful Home Health Remedies

Before running to your local pharmacy to pick up over the counter medications for common ailments, check your kitchen cabinets! There may be several health remedies that are already in your own home. You may also be able to find some simple ingredients at your local grocery store or farmer’s market. Home health remedies have been used, tried and true, for many generations. They can save you money and have been found to be safe and effective.

Ginger Root
Ginger tea can help treat symptoms of the common cold. To make ginger tea, you will need approximately 10 grams of ginger root, hot water, honey, and lemon. First slice the ginger root into thin slices. Place the ginger in a pot of water and bring it to a rapid boil. Once the water has been brought to a full boil, cover the pot and let it simmer for about 15 minutes. Strain the water and your tea is done! You can add honey and lemon to sweeten the tea. This tea will help soothe your cold symptoms.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera has been known as a great remedy for burns of any kind. It is a natural pain reliever and has anti-inflammatory qualities. First you will need to remove an entire aloe leaf from your plant. Try to remove the leaf from as close to the trunk as you can. Using a knife, carefully make a cut down the middle of the leaf. This way any yellow latex in the leaf can drain out. The latex can be an irritant so it needs to be removed from the leaf. Next you will need a serrated knife for removal of the leaf’s thick outer skin. This can be a little tricky and may require some practice. If you are able to successfully remove the outer skin, you will end up with a piece of gel. Rinse the gel under cold water and apply to the skin right away. The gel can be stored in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for about 1 week. The Aloe gel can be applied as often as needed to help heal the burned area.

Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions. You can calm the burn and itch caused by shingles simply by applying it directly on the affected area. This can be done up to seven times in a 24 hour period. Apple cider vinegar can also be used to help treat poison ivy. Mix equal parts of vinegar and water and gently dab it on the affected area with a cotton ball. It can be applied as often as necessary.

Clove Oil

A clove oil compress can be made to treat a toothache. Clove has long been known as a natural pain-killer and it also has antibacterial qualities. You can make the compress by mixing 3 drops of clove oil with 1/4 teaspoon of olive oil. Soak a cotton ball in the mixture and apply to the affected tooth. You may also gently bite down on the cotton ball if you would like to hold it in place.

Garlic
Garlic is known as a natural antibiotic and it can be used to treat an earache. To make garlic oil when you have an earache, simply crush one bulb of garlic and mix it with some olive oil in a small bowl or jar. The garlic and oil will need to settle for a couple of days–it cannot be used immediately. Once the oil has settled, warm it up a bit and apply directly to the affected ear. You can use a cotton ball to keep the oil in the ear. Let it sit in the ear for about 20 minutes before rinsing it out. This can be done three or four times each day to help soothe an earache.

As you can see, there are several different ingredients that can be used to treat common problems. Utilizing them can save you money and a trip to your doctor’s office.
