Moving home is considered one of the most stressful things you will do in your life. In fact, according to research from E.ON, it is more stressful than the breakdown of a relationship, divorce or starting a new job.
One reason moving house is so stressful is because of the sheer amount of things that you need to remember and do. From the smaller (but still important) tasks, such as using up the contents of your freezer so you can defrost it before the move, to the bigger and vital tasks, such as booking a removals van.
First of all, making a list in order of things that need doing will be a big help, then you can tick them off as you go to make sure you don’t miss anything out.
Who do you need to inform of your new address?
Your continuous tweets and Facebook statuses have ensured that your friends and family are more than aware that you have a new address. But, have you told the people that really need it? With so many to remember, including the DVLA, bank, and electoral roll, it is easy to forget a few.
You could consider setting up Royal Mail re-direct, this will give you peace of mind that you won’t miss out on any letters and more importantly will ensure that your new bank card (or Graze Box) doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.
How are you going to transport the contents of your home?
One of the most important things to consider when you are moving home is how you are going to get your belongings from your old house to your new house. First of all have a clear out, what do you really need to take with you? Can some of it be thrown out or stored to move at a later date?
This will also help cut costs and mean you don’t book a bigger van than you need. Look at what you have left; you may even be able to hire a van and do it yourself! But, if you go for a removals company leave yourself plenty of time to compare quotes.
Where are you going to keep your other belongings?
It’s a good idea to organize storage facilities, so you have somewhere to keep any of the belongings that you can’t initially move with you. This is particularly important if you are downsizing, as you may have a lot of items that just won’t fit in your new house but you don’t want to throw away.
It will also be helpful on moving day, especially if you have over estimated how much will fit in, because you will have somewhere to take your favorite armchair, other than the tip!
How will you organize your belongings?
Considering how you are going to pack your belongings is (almost) as important as booking a removals van. It is easy to just throw items into boxes, for ease and to speed up the process.
But, all this will really do is prolong the process the other end, when you have no idea where anything is. Labeling boxes and planning where furniture is going beforehand, will reduce stress and speed up the moving process.
What essentials need to be packed separately?
Think about packing a separate box that includes essentials you need just before you move out and just after you move in. You don’t want to be searching for the kettle when you’re gasping for a cuppa on moving day!
