The Many Uses of Glass Cleaner

Glass Cleaner

Glass cleaner is no longer just for mirrors and other glass surfaces; it can clean a wide variety of other materials and surfaces. That streak less shine you so admire on your mirror means that modern glass cleaners can now do much more than back in your grandmother’s day!

When a few obnoxious bugs get in the house there’s no need to run for the bug spray. Glass cleaner is an effective deterrent against all sorts of creepy crawly critters. They don’t care for the smell of it and will gladly vacate your premises. Glass cleaner has also been shown to kill non-stinging insects. Stinging instincts are much hard to kill, in case you didn’t know — that’s why sprays specifically for them have much stronger warning labels on them, because they are much more powerful poisons. Here again, glass cleaner can come to your rescue because although it does not kill stinging insects instantly it will discourage them from hanging around, and if they are given several vigorous doses they will eventually kick the bucket. The ammonia in most glass cleaners works as an effective bug barrier when sprayed around doors and window sills.

According to Elliott Greenberg, founder of Wholesale Janitorial Supply, “Other uses for glass cleaner include your laundry; it’s an effective laundry stain remover. NOT the blue colored kind, mind you; only the clear spray should be used. Always test the fabric prior to spraying. Sorry, but it won’t work on wool or silk.”

On other delicate fabrics soak in vinegar first before spraying with clear glass cleaner; the acetic acid will counteract the ammonia in the cleaner. You can also use glass cleaner on non-porous jewelry such as diamonds and emeralds. It won’t work on pearls or opals. Use an old toothbrush. If you warm the glass cleaner in the microwave prior to scrubbing down your gemstones it works much faster and penetrates deeper. It can also be used to keep gold and silver nice and shiny, but only if it’s pure gold — gold and silver plated articles can discolor.

Use glass cleaner to sanitize children’s playthings and prevent bacteria buildup. Kitty litter boxes can be kept sweet smelling by spraying them with glass cleaner when you empty and change the litter. Don’t let eraser marks get the best of you on dry eraser board; use glass cleaner to erase them and to keep the whiteboard itself bright and shiny. A wipe with a rag and glass cleaner keeps doorknobs, keyboards, and phones from harboring pathogens like bacteria and mold spores. Cut crystal objects respond well to ordinary glass cleaner; no need to go out and buy some expensive specialty item if you have a lot of crystal items. Just remember to change clothes frequently. Outdoor furniture and play sets also respond well to glass cleaner. And the versatility just keeps going!

Chairs with vinyl upholstery can be cleaned with glass cleaner; it really removes any trace of stickiness from spilled food and drinks, and keeps the vinyl from feeling sticky in the summer time humidity. With computer screens and large screen televisions it’s always best to use the clear glass spray — blue glass cleaner can contain minute particle of grit which are harmless on ordinary mirrors but can pit the finer glass on a large screen TV.
