When I was growing up I was always a tomboy. I liked to do all the fun stuff the boys did. I never had interest in playing with dolls or wearing dresses. Growing up in the country, surrounded by my friends – mostly boys – I was either outside on a four-wheeler/dirt bike or playing sports.
My close friends knew who I really was and knew that I could keep up with the boys on just about everything. There were always skeptics.. always. Those skeptics would tell me that I couldn’t win that dirt bike race because I was a girl or since I was a girl I couldn’t drive as well as the boys. But I will never forget their faces as I left them in the dust and did win those races or at least gave them a run for their money.
Their words gave me power. They never discouraged me, only made me try harder and do my best. That is something I hope I’m teaching my daughter. She is quite the opposite of me and likes dresses and all those girly things but I still want her to know that no matter what the obstacle is, she can overcome it. We also try to teach them that winning isn’t everything. The only thing that matters is that they try their best in everything they do.
