Becoming a parent is one of the greatest joys in life. The world completely changes when your bundle of joy is placed into your arms.
The first year of your baby’s life can truly be an adventure. It is all about getting to know this new little person. As a brand new parent, you will find yourself navigating through your baby’s many changes.
This a magic word when it comes to babies. You will probably get the “how is the baby sleeping?” question more than a few times during the first year. Remember that sleep schedules will fluctuate and that every baby is different. Don’t compare yourself to anybody else.
Your baby might sleep more or less depending on things like:
- Growth spurts:
Baby will have a couple of growth spurts during the first year. These commonly happen the first two weeks after the birth, at the 4-6 week mark, 3 months, 4 months, 6 months and 9 months. It is normal to see changes in sleep pattern during these times. These kind of sleep disruptions usually only last a couple of days. Lots of cuddles, walks, music, and baths are great options to try and help your baby relax.
- Developmental milestones:
Your baby will learn a lot of new things during the first year. The first couple of months will be all about learning to use their voice, grasping at objects, rolling over, sitting up, crawling and eventually walking. Achieving all of these things in such a short amount of time is a lot of hard work. While your baby is perfecting these brand new skills, you might notice some changes to her sleep pattern.
These changes are also a great segue way to start learning about baby proofing. In a blink of an eye, you will have a little one running around.
The eating patterns of your baby will inevitably change. Be flexible and keep these things in mind:
- Follow your baby’s cues:
Babies don’t come with a manual but they are all about survival instinct. Your baby will let you know if she is hungry. Every baby is different and sometimes it’s best to deviate from a set feeding schedule.
Breastfeed on demand. This will not only ensure that your baby is getting enough to eat, it will also give your baby security and comfort. If you are bottle feeding, baby can usually go a little bit longer in between feedings because formula takes longer to digest than breastmilk.
As parents, we don’t like to see our children in discomfort. Unfortunately, throughout the first year, your baby might get uncomfortable and have changes in feeding patterns. A cold or allergies can make your baby loose her appetite. All the extra mucus in the nose and throat can cause discomfort and make it more difficult for her to eat.
Teething is another time that your baby might be eating less. The pain of the swollen gums can make her fussy and not hungry. These discomforts will pass. Frequent, smaller feedings can be a good approach if your baby isn’t feeling well.
Cutting teeth are one of the major changes in your baby’s first year. You will be delighted to see a toothy grin! But remember that teething can be a challenge for your baby. All you can do its try to ease the discomfort.
- If your baby is teething she might have a great urge to chew on her hands. Keep some teething toys handy. You can always freeze the toys to give a little more comfort to her. Make sure that the teethers are BPA and PVC free.
