Like the Nancy Drew Resorting to Danger PC Game you play as Nancy Drew to find clues and evidence to solve the case. With Warnings at Waverly Academy you’re undercover at an elite all-girls boarding school to and your mission is to discover the culprit behind threatening notes and dangerous accidents that seem to be targeted towards the academy’s valedictorian candidates.

It’s kind of cool because you actually get to snoop through dorm rooms and use your cell phone to take pictures of the evidence you find… you’re also able to help other girls with their projects and navigate the social scene. One of my favorite parts of the game is that you are able to play air hockey in the student lounge or even run the school snackbar if you want.

There are two difficulty settings on the game (Jr. or Sr. Detective) so whether your a novice or an expert to the detective field you’ll enjoy playing the game. Another cool feature is that if you make a mistake in the game and mess something up on your journey, you don’t have to start all over like some games. With Warning at Waverly Academy you just restart at the place before the fatal mistake.

Overview: I think this is a fun game, especially for girls. Gameplay is easy and so far this is probably my favorite Nancy Drew game.

We had the chance to review the new software and share our experiences with you. I have only tried a few different types of security software but so far the Trend Micro Internet Security software is pretty cool.

My favorite part is the Home Network Security Management function which allows you to see and remotely manage other computers in your home network through a graphical home network map and block wireless network intruders. To me this is a great feature because living in a college town, you see a lot of people using laptops and connecting to the internet by using someone else’s internet connection.

The Security Activity Dashboard also lets you view a customizable snapshot of all the security activities on your computers through easy-to-understand charts and graphs.

For those of you who travel and use your laptop or smartphone, I would recommend getting the Pro version because you also get a license for Mobile Security which protects smartphones against viruses, spam, data theft, service disruptions and other malware attacks.

Other features of Trend Micro Internet Security include:

• Automatically prevent suspicious software on USB drives from opening and installing itself on the computer.
• Analyze suspicious domain names and block attempts to open potentially dangerous Web sites.
• Rate the safety of hyperlink search results via search engines such as Biglobe™ (one of the largest Internet Service Providers in Japan), Infoseek™ and Bing™ on the Trend Micro Toolbar.
• Improved correlation via the Trend Micro Smart Protection Network – customers are part of a “neighborhood watch” system of protection that means greater security.

The software was easy to set up on our PC laptop. Once installed it automatically ran a virus check and updated the definition files. I didn’t really have any trouble, except when using the browser protection. While using that, when I would click on a link it would be a little slow at loading.

I was also invited to an online event where a Trend Micro Family Online Safety Expert gave some great tips on keeping you and your family safe while being online. A few tips they shared:

• Agree with your kids as to where, when, and for how long they will be on the Internet.
• Decide together on a list of sites or types of sites they can visit. Use content filtering as well.
• Advise your kids not to give our personal information, especially not to strangers, such as home address, phone numbers, credit card numbers, passwords, or their location. Use data protection features in security software if necessary.
• Ask them to treat other with respect online, just as they would in person.
• Advise them not to post comments or pictures that they wouldn’t want the whole world to see.
• Ask them to tell you if they come across anyone behaving badly online.

All are great tips on keeping your family safe!

The only reason we really have a printer is because we wanted to be able to print high quality photos of the twins to send to family members, keep for ourselves or to make creative scrapbook layouts.

I’ve been using the HP Photosmart D7560 for a couple of weeks now because I wanted to actually test it out more than once before I wrote this review. So far, I absolutely love this little guy. It prints flawlessly and super fast. We have even done comparison tests to see if we could tell the difference between the photos we printed from the HP Photosmart D7560 and the photos we had printed at our local retailer. We couldn’t tell the difference and neither could any of the family members we sent photos to. We did get asked if we switched printers because the quality of the photos are so much better than what we got with our old printer.

The setup was fast and easy. I was printing photos in no time and the photo menu was very easy to navigate. It’s very user friendly compared to other printers I have checked out. HP also has larger ink tanks which is great because you’re not replacing ink all the time. Although, when you do have to replace each of the 5 inks, it might be a little costly but in my opinion it’ll be well worth it. It also doesn’t count the number of pages you print and then tell you the ink is empty/not print when the ink is half full.  The Dell we had would still print the images unlike some Epson and Canon printers but we would receive this annoying pop up screen every time we tried to print something.

One of the coolest features of this printer is the paper trays. The main tray holds approximately 125 sheets of paper. There’s also a second tray for photo printing, which can hold up to 20 sheets of 4×6 or 5×7 paper. Having two trays allows you to switch back and forth between documents and photos without having to swap paper in the tray each time. If you use the printer for photos only, you can load two different-size papers, one in each tray, to have both sizes available at all times to save you some time. Cool huh!

Another cool feature… it prints on discs. Now, I haven’t tried this feature out yet so I can’t tell you how it did. I do plan on checking it out soon because we are working on putting some stuff on a CD for a birthday present, so I will try and remember to update the review to reflect my experiences with that task.

Rosetta Stone Review

Have you always wanted to learn a new language? Did you study a language in high school or college- eons ago- and wish you could brush up on what you already know? Are you hoping to expand your marketability by learning to speak and read a language that prospective employers will find invaluable? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you need to try Rosetta Stone.

Rosetta Stone is a leader in the language learning software market. They advertise their product in magazines, on the internet, and on television as well. This software provides its users the fastest way to learn a language available on the market.

Thanks to Mom Fuse, I had the opportunity to review the Spanish- Latin America version- of Rosetta Stone. Once I agreed to the review, I informed my 11 year-old son that he would be reviewing the software with me.

We were not sent a CD set to review; rather, Rosetta Stone sent us one headset (a necessary component to this program) and a log-in key that provided us with a trial version of the software directly online.

Once we logged in, I saw that we were given the choice to review all of the languages that Rosetta Stone offers. As tempting as it was to try more than one, we made the decision to stick with Spanish and see how far into the program we could get.

(I have to admit, my son picked up on the program much faster than I did.)

This is an amazing program. My son and I found ourselves completely immersed in the learning of Spanish. I had my son go through everything with me, and though it took longer for us to complete the program (my fault, as I was the slower learner), we managed to do so, and enjoyed the process.

During the first part of the program we were presented with a series of images and a word is spoken with the accompanying text appearing on screen. We had to match the images with the words. When we had it right, we advanced, and when we didn’t, we continued to try until we did. We found that we moved very quickly through the first part of the program.

As we advanced through the program, the simple words became phrases and then sentences. We learned that there was a pattern to the program, and once we recognized the pattern, the learning became simpler for us.

It was exciting for both us in the early stages of the program when we pronounced the words and phrases correctly, but the best part of it was knowing that we were beginning to actually comprehend what we were reading. Through that comprehension, we were able to advance through the program successfully.

What this program does not provide is a set vocabulary list. You will not find the parts of speech broken down in such as way as you would expect if you were learning Spanish from a textbook. That is not the concept behind the Rosetta Stone learning software. The basis of this software is to learn by hearing, seeing and speaking in context.

I highly recommend Rosetta Stone. This program will enable you to learn a language in the comfort of your home, at your own pace, and in an enjoyable manner. You will learn the language. Guaranteed.

That is exactly what this software creates. Now anyone can try their hand at claymation.

I was able to easily follow the download process and in just a few moment it was all ready to go.

I have to say that it took me a little while to figure out how everything worked together. This was my first experience working with this kind of software.

But once I fiddled around with all the different features I saw the potential it has.

Being that we are a homeschooling family, I immediately starting thinking about how great this product would be for our schooling.

What a neat way to put together a report for History. Create their own live history show from their perspective.

My daughter is using her flip camera that she got for Christmas this year to make her own masterpiece.

The possibilities are endless in the ways this program will be used in our home this year. In fact, when my kids finish making their movie, I’ll post it here so you can see it.

Maybe we have the next great Pixar movie maker in the making here. It all started with Gumby now didn’t it.

Keeping in Touch is Easier Thanks to Presto

I just got back yesterday from a two-week trip to Texas to visit my family for the holidays. As much as I wanted to come home, parting is always hard. It was especially difficult to say goodbye to my grandma.

My grandma has peritoneal cancer. It had been in remission for the past 3 years, but just before Christmas it reappeared. The type of cancer she has will never disappear completely, so her doctor recommended that she enjoy the holidays with her family, rather than undergo chemotherapy right away. In a couple of weeks she will start her first round of treatments. I know how hard it was on her 3 years ago, and although this time she knows what to expect, I can only imagine it’ll be just as tough. It makes me teary just thinking about it.

I don’t send photos to my grandparents and other distant family as much as I should. Not because I don’t want to, but since they’re all digital at this point, sometimes I just forget to print them other than for special occasions. It’s so easy to attach a photo to an email or quickly upload it to Flickr, that I take for granted the fact that not everyone has access to the Internet, like my grandparents for example. I can’t be the only one with this problem! But how to bridge the gap between the tech-savvy and the tech-challenged? I know my grandparents would NEVER go through the hassle of learning to use a computer!

HP has come up with a solution to this dilemma, with their Presto Printing Mailbox. I couldn’t have found out about this product at a better time! Coupled with the Presto Mail service, my grandparents can now receive emails, photos, reminders, and more, automatically delivered to their Presto Printing Mailbox on a daily basis. All it requires is a phone line and an electrical outlet nearby.

I set up the printer in less than 10 minutes. First, I signed up for the Presto Mail service at Presto.com/signup, then I pulled the printer out of the box, all while my grandparents watched with puzzles looks on their faces.

I placed it in the living area, where they spend most their time. By simply plugging it into the phone line and power outlet, loading it with plain paper, and popping in the ink cartridge, the Presto Printing Mailbox was ready to go! Within a few minutes the printer dialed in to Presto, and a Welcome email arrived!

The “emails” come out of the Printing Mailbox as nicely formatted letters, complete with color photos. When an email is sent, the sender receives confirmation that the message was delivered, along with a link to see it as it looks when it’s printed out. To avoid junk mail, I’ve granted access to only specified friends and family, specifically all of my aunts, uncles, and cousins that are online. I can then check to see which “friends” have emailed them recently, and give the ones that haven’t a little nudge to encourage them to communicate more.

I have that privilege because I’m the Account Manager. Sounds very official, doesn’t it? Actually it’s so useful because not only can I keep tabs on who emails them, but I can also keep an eye on the ink level of the printer, paper status, and change settings when necessary. I can call them and tell them to add paper as needed, and order more ink online so they don’t have to worry about finding it at the store.

There are health and wellness articles that I can send my grandparents, as well as crossword puzzles and recipes. I can schedule event reminders to be delivered at a specific date and time, and even create to-do lists and calendars personalized with photos! To test Presto for the first time, I sent my grandma a calendar page for January, complete with a goofy photo of me, my brother, and two cousins. She loved it! Before I left, I noticed that it’s already up on the wall in her bedroom, filled with penciled-in doctor’s appointments.

The printer itself takes up a good amount of space, so I dedicated a small side table just for its use. It has a shelf to store extra paper. In addition to the paper, I also bought a binder and a hole punch, and punched holes in all the pages so that as they are printed, my grandparents can put them in the binder and look at them whenever they’d like.

I could go on and on about what I love about the Presto Printing Mailbox. One aspect that I’m not so keen on, though, is the price. It’s available for approximately $149.99 and the Presto Mail Service costs anywhere from $12.50-$14.99 a month, depending on whether a subscription is purchased or if it’s paid for month to month. It can be found online at Presto.com or at a variety of online retailers, and it’s even being sold in some stores now. I noticed that the price went down significantly over the holidays, and I was hoping it would stay like that, but it didn’t.

Ultimately the fact that my grandparents will feel a little more connected to us is more than worth the monthly fee. I’m certain that frequent messages from family and friends will help lift my grandma’s spirits when she’s not feeling well, and needless to say, that is priceless!

But yet, it calls my name…”Gina!!” It says. “Come and play with me! Beat that next level!” HELP! I can’t stop!

World of Goo is definitely one of the BEST games I have ever played. For $20, you certainly get your money’s worth from it by offering hours of game play and mind boggling challenges!

Defining the laws to gravity, this puzzle game really puts your mind and imagination to work. The goal? To get a certain number of Goo balls from the starting point to the pipe by building structures using the slimy, wiggly goo balls themselves, all while still having enough left over to meet the quota for the Goo Corporation Pipe.

 

 

Each level (there are 47 in all, in 4 levels), and type of goo ball, offers its own challenge. Build towers, cannonballs, flying machines, bridges, or whatever your mind can fathom to get the goo balls from point A to point B. The possibilities are endless and each are fascinating! Even better is that you ca go back and play your favorite levels and perfect each contraption!

World of Goo has beautiful graphics and the sounds are fun and fitting, adding a nice element to the game. There is also a humorous storyline that ties the puzzles together, which most of it is brought to you via “The Sign Painter.” I haven’t gotten quite far enough along in the game to fully get the story part, but I must say, the signs are quirky and fun! I find myself searching them out and reading them before starting the levels.

World of Goo is easily the game of the year and has already been awarded the “Design Innovation Award” and the “Technical Excellence Award” at the 2008 Independent Game Festival.
