Stacy, age 33, is a mom and a registered nurse. She was diagnosed with Stage 3 Breast Cancer in 2009. It has mastesized to her lymph nodes and Stacy has been given a 41% chance to pull through. Since the diagnosis Stacy has been unable to work,  this mom NEEDS our help.

When Stacy started chemo it threw her into menopause and she had to have a total abdominal hysterectomy. On September 30th Stacy had a double radical mastectomy. After the mastectomy she had a severe MRSA infection and had to wear a wound vac for 2 months with visiting nurses.

Stacy has completed 7 rounds of chemo and is currently going through weekly chemo treatments for 12 more weeks, followed by 32 radiation treatments.

If you are a parent, you will want to consider using the service of a babysitter. This will enable you and your spouse to get out of the house and enjoy time alone. In fact, you can even have a “real,” date. Go to dinner and a movie with your spouse. Unfortunately, many married couples find themselves entering into a comfort zone that results in their relationship feeling more like a friendship than a marriage. Do not let your relationship get to this point. Dating is a nice and easy way to prevent that from happening.

In addition to hiring a babysitter, rely on a trusted friend or family member. What is nice about taking this approach is the comfort level. Instead of picking a babysitter out of a phone book, you are entrusting the care of your children into someone that you know and trust. This alone can result in you having a better time on a date. You may also feel more comfortable leaving your children with a trusted friend or relative overnight, as opposed to an unknown babysitter. What does this mean? It means that in addition to enjoying a traditional date, you may also enjoy a nice, sexual night of privacy, possibly at a nice hotel.

In keeping with childcare that will allow you and your spouse to spend some romantic, intimate, and quality time together, consider approaching other parents. Do you know the parents of your children’s friends? If you do, consider making a monthly arrangement with them. Let them keep your kids for one night and you can do the same for them. This approach is nice, as you are likely to feel comfortable living your children in the care of another parent. Also, remember that all parents find it difficult to seek privacy and intimacy. You may be doing the other set of parents a huge favor.

As important as dating is and can be to your relationship, be realistic. Not every night can be a date night. With that said, there are still ways that you can be romantic and intimate with your spouse at home. For example, sneak in a few hugs and kisses here and here. When your husband is walking past you, stop him and give him a quick kiss. A simple kiss is enough to show your partner that you care and want to be intimate with him, without making your children, who may be watching, feel uncomfortable or out of place.

Another unique and creative way to keep the romance and intimacy alive when you may be unable to have sex or go on a date is the use of text messages. Do you and your spouse have and use cell phones? If you do, send them a sexy and seductive text message. Let them know that you can’t wait until they arrive home. Even if your partner is sitting across the room from them, send them a quick message. If you do not own or use a cell phone, know that a handwritten love note can be just as effective.

As you can see, there are a number of ways that you, as parents, can still have a happy and healthy sex life. Implement a few of these steps to help keep your relationship and its romance alive and well.

Sign #1 – You Have a Healthy Relationship

Contrary to what most people believe, sex is more than just having intercourse. An important component of having a happy and healthy sex life is that of engaging in foreplay. Foreplay can be something as simple as holding hands or giving a relaxing massage. Love notes, kind gestures, and doing something that your partner may not expect on a daily basis are all easy ways to keep your partner interested in you, both emotionally and physically. You have a healthy and happy sex life when the romance continues on long past intercourse has come to an end.

So, do you have a happy and healthy sex life? If a number of the above mentions signs describes your relationship with your significant other, there is a good chance that you do.

Even if you have a happy and healthy sex life now, it is important to remember that things may change. Remember that as time passes, it may be easier to let sex impact your relationship negatively. Be sure to always keep an open line of communication with your partner, especially where sex and their needs are concerned.

Flora Springs Winery

Recently, I was able to enjoy some wines from Flora Springs Winery and Vineyards. Both wines were enjoyable, competitively priced, and come from green farming methods.

Flora Springs, a third generation winery in St. Helena, California, offers a wonderful selection of wines and they use sustainable and organic farming practices (20% is certified organic, with another 240 acres to be certified this year). The winery, owned by the Komes-Garvey families, own 650 acres of sustainable vineyards. All of their wines come from their estate grown fruit to ensure that they maintain the quality of their wines. In December 2007, Flora Springs implemented solar power at the Komes Ranch on Zinfandel Lane, enabling all of their red wine production to go completely off the grid. (per Flora Springs Facts, Jarvis Communications).

Flora Springs 2006 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon – This Cabernet has a spicy, pepper aroma with a piquant, berry flavor and velvet feel when you drink it. The tannins hit the back of your tongue but do not over power this wine. Cabernet Sauvignon is typically paired with beef and heavy pasta dishes; and I really enjoyed this wine with both spaghetti Bolognese and beef stroganoff. The heavy cream sauce and beef in the stroganoff really complemented the spicy aroma and flavor of this wine. This wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and all of the grapes come from 3 of the Flora Springs vineyards. At $36, this is priced very competitively with other Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons. The Winemaker notes that this wine should be enjoyed now through 2014.

Flora Springs 2008 Oakville Sauvignon Blanc, Soliloquy Vineyard – This wine is brand new to the Flora Springs collection. This pale yellow wine smells of tropical fruit, citrus, and floral notes. None of the aromas overpowered one another. The Oakville Sauvignon Blanc has a floral, citrus taste as well. This wine is 100% Oakville Sauvignon Blanc from their Soliloquy Vineyard. I enjoyed this wine both alone and with lighter meals. Although this is not a typical pairing, I really enjoyed it with home made chicken noodle soup. The light chicken broth really complemented the flavors of this wine. The Oakville Sauvignon Blanc retails for $20.

Purple Basil

I have noticed that some of the plants in my yard really struggle to do well.  I water, we have mulch, but they never look like the plants in my parents’ yard.  My Mom reminded me that they have been composting for years and her plants do well from all of the nutrients.  I decided that I wanted to compost, but space is an issue so I need to find a creative alternative.  This led me to search for a small compost bin. 

I was introduced to Sophia Chiang, who has been blogging about her composting experience on Random Rants and Raves http://ophiesay.blogspot.com/.  Her compost bin is small, manageable, and a great place for me to start.  She uses composting worms (also known as red wrigglers).  Chicago’s weather is often too hot or two cold for traditional composting.  Small composting can be done affordably and indoors.

I plan to purchase an inexpensive shallow plastic bin.  I will drill some small holes for ventilation, and buy some worms.  The worms are supposed to multiply quickly, so I shouldn’t need many to get started.  I have the soil, newspapers, and fruit and vegetable scraps will be easy.  The worms are readily available online but I may call around to a few garden shops first. 

 In my quest to find composting options, I found other options that would work well in small yards or for those of you who would like to ‘test’ the idea of composting before making a larger investment.  Jessica Butcher, registered dietician and nutrition writer for the Examiner in Grand Rapids (http://www.examiner.com/x-14696-Grand-Rapids-Nutrition-Examiner), offers the following suggestions:

•           Within your vegetable garden, section off a small area with simple ‘chicken wire’ and use this space to place and rotate your compost waste. This makes for a wonderfully convenient space as you are simply able to open the wire fence or lift the wire and move your compost over your garden for the winter with ease.

•           Place a wire cage off to the side of your yard and use this to place all of your compost. Rotate as necessary with a stick or pitchfork.

•           Have an old garbage can around that you are no longer using? Poke some decent sized holes for aeration and use this for your compost. The lid is great for locking in the warmth and it is very easy to roll the can around for mixing up the compost!

If you are only starting to consider composting, here is another great reason.  “Tidy, easy and handy in the smallest yard – and they even can help you lose weight!  Composting worms need fruit and vegetable scraps to survive – so if you want to keep your worms healthy, you need to be eating healthy too,” says Mary Ellen Psaltis, Certified Nutrition and Wellness Consultant.

Until recently, the only options for liquidating an underperforming or unneeded policy was to let it lapse, sell it back to the original insurer for its current net cash surrender value, or to exercise a non-forfeiture option. In a life settlement, the sale price is less than the policy’s face value, but is higher than the policy’s net cash surrender value. The price can range as low as 3% to as high as 30% of the face value of the policy (death benefit), but usually averages to about 15% of your policy’s face value. The value in the life settlement transaction is determined by a number of factors including: your age and medical condition, the type of insurance, the amount of premium payments, and the status of loans on the policy.

There are many reasons you may no longer need or desire a life insurance policy:
• loss of a loved one
• need to pay for long term care or medical costs
• premiums have become unaffordable
• divorce
• beneficiaries no longer need the death benefit
• financial hardship
• your estate got smaller
• a key executive retired
• sale of a business
• loan repayment
• policy underperforming your expectations
• your level term life’s conversion period is expiring
• estate tax law revisions mean your heirs no longer face a hefty tax bill at your death

Who can qualify?
A potential candidate for a life settlement is typically aged 65 or older; has a life insurance policy with a face amount of at least $250,000, and has a life expectancy greater than 2 years.

What type of insurance policy can be sold?
Most types of life insurance policies can qualify as long as they’ve been in existence for more than 2 years. However the most common are Universal Life, Whole Life, Variable Life, Survivorship Life, and convertible Term Life.

What happens to my policy?
A life settlement transfers ownership of your policy to a third party investor that only has a financial rather than an insurable interest in your life. In other words, the death benefit will eventually be paid to the new owner. Once you sell your policy you give up all rights and obligation to the investor in exchange for the sale price. The buyers are usually institutional investors such as pension funds, charitable endowments, universities, and hedge funds.

What can the money be used for?
You can spend the money on whatever you like. Some people use it to fund other investments, make charitable donations, fund a relative’s education, or even purchase replacement life insurance.

What are the fees?
Be aware that the commissions on life settlements can be as high as 33%. These commissions are negotiated between the advisor and the purchasing company, but are not always disclosed to the client. Make sure your advisor clearly states their cut. Most commissions hover around 8% of the net death benefit or 30% of the offer price, whichever is less.

Other than commission there is no other fee. You can put your policy out for bids and decide whether or not you will accept a bid or turn it down. The whole process takes about 4 months.

Do I have to take a bid if I don’t like it?
Never! There is absolutely never any obligation or fees if you don’t want to accept the bids for your policy. It is free to put your life insurance policy out for bid just to see what it’s worth in the life settlement market.

What are the tax implications?
A life settlement is generally a taxable event.
• The portion of the policy owner’s investment (premiums paid) will be received tax-free.
• The difference between the premiums paid and the net cash surrender value will be taxed as ordinary income.
• The portion exceeding the net cash surrender value will be a gain, in most circumstances a capital gain.
Since every situation is different it is important that you consult with your tax advisor when contemplating selling your life insurance. Life settlement brokers are not tax consultants.

Important Considerations
Life settlements can be a wonderful source of funds. But they are not for everyone. You must consider whether your parents still have a need for continued coverage. If their premiums are too expensive they may be able to lower the amount of coverage and keep the current policy by exercising a non-forfeiture option.
