Crafty Round up: Little Odessa

I haven’t done a round up in a while. This week I have been working on a set of nesting dolls, and it prompted me to look online for some inspiration.
So this week’s round up is dedicated to the neighborhood just a few miles from where I live, called “Little Odessa” (a predominantly russian neighborhood in Brooklyn, close to Coney Island).

Victorian Inspiration

I’ve been really feeling the victorian thing in my art lately. It’s mostly because I found a whole bunch of victorian ephemera in my stash, from when I first started working with paper and making cards and such.
So this week’s round up isn’t a tutorial, but a round up of Victorian Altered Art Inspiration.

I felt you

This week’s round up is inspired by Felt! I have always wanted to learn at needle felting, to make cute toys for my little one. I bought a book on needlefelting while I was pregnant with my daughter, but of course, never did anything with it.
So I’m thinking I might try to really do some needle felting this autumn, to make her some cool toys and such.
So this week’s round up is all about Needle felting.

To get you started on needle felting, you’ll need some supplies, which I recommend purchasing from Made by Moxie. There are a ton of other sellers out there, but I just recommend her. I love her work.

How To Make A Lavender Sachet

Hello!

Hope you are having a great summer and have some fun times planned for the weekend!It’s been a while since I last posted here at momfuse.

Oh Boy! So much has happened over the past few months and I’ve just really been gradually adjusting to all the changes. Loss of special someone, major decisions, really just the day to day happenings that life throws our way but at times we are not fully prepared for.

So to cheer things up and get things going again, I decided to share a little craft tutorial you might enjoy making for the remaining days of the summer.

Can you believe it’s almost over? School will pick up again soon and August is now here!

This tutorial is: how to make a lavender sachet. I originally posted it on my blog to start up a little feature I have there every week (well, honestly right now it’s try to have every week) : How To – Tuesday. It’s a great way to up-cycle selvedges and scrap fabrics.

And by the way, if you do have some how-tos, recipes, tutorials (they can be about anything, the more the merrier) that you would like to share, let me know! I’m always looking for fun things to make and to share.

Enough of my banter! Here is the tutorial:

Materials:

- Scrap fabrics & selvedges

- Organic French lavender (about 1/4 cup)

- Organic Flaxseed (about 1/2 cup)

Tools needed:

- Matt and rotary cutter

- Scissors

- Pinking shears

- Straight pins

- Needle & thread

- Sewing Machine

1. Cut fabric to make two 5×5 pieces. Trim the edges with a pinking shears to prevent fraying – I forgot this step when making these so make sure you don’t

2. Pin and sew three of the sides. Leaving top open.

3. Prepare handle by trimming the fraying side of selvedge with pinking shears. Length of handle is up to you, I used an 8″ long selvedge making approx. a 3.5″ drop handle.

4. Generously fill the sac with mixture of organic French lavender and organic flaxseed.

5. Pin the handle in the middle of the top edge.

6. Sew the top. Back stitch at both ends. And Voila!!

These little sachets make great gifts. You can use them in your dryer, drawers. They also make soothing heated eye masks that will drive away headaches and tensions.
