If you go to your doctor to discuss methods to rescue your receding hairline then he might suggest Propecia. This is a tablet which is taken orally and works by inhibiting the production of DHT. Over 95% of male baldness is thought to be as a result of DHT levels. This drug works by preventing DHT being able to bind to hair follicles and so makes hairs last longer. It has some pretty good evidence; around 66% of its users have experienced significant hair growth.
This certainly is a good way to re-grow your hair, however it can be expensive. Before you get interested in this project make sure that you realize that you will have to continue paying this money for life in order to benefit. Propecia is giving some men more confidence, so some people think that it’s worth the cost.

Another well known treatment which can be used for both women and men is minoxodil; this is sold in the United States as Rogaine. This is a very good drug which is ideal for re-growing your receding hair loss. It is a topical solution which is applied directly to the affected areas; it’s also much cheaper than Propecia. It does however involve much more effort, you need to put this on twice a day and leave it to soak for four hours. This makes it very time consuming even if it is affordable. The effects will only last as long as you continue using it.

A more permanent solution is a hair transplant; however this will cost you a lot more money than the other options. This is a surgical procedure which needs to be done at a clinic. It will take between one and two years for the process to be completed and can cost well over $15,000 so make sure you know what you are in store for! Hair is removed from the sides and back of the head and then replanted in the front areas. The hair at the back and sides is immune to the effects of DHT which means once this is done you will not lose hair again.

There are plenty of male baldness treatments available; you just have to research in order to find the right one. You also need to be careful that you don’t end up paying over the odds for a substandard treatment.

Let Me Tell You ‘Bout Burt’s Bees….

Do you know what I absolutely love reviewing?  Beauty and skin care products!  As a mom, it’s not as easy to find the time or justify the expense of products for me.  When I married my husband, I vowed to continue to make myself look nice every day and not “slack off.”  Having a child makes this a little more difficult (one day I’ll give you some tips about how to do things like shower or shave your legs or put on your makeup with a toddler) but it’s still just as important to me.

I recently had the opportunity to try Burt’s Bees new Radiance Day Lotion and it’s absolutely divine!  I was initially introduced to Burt’s Bees when I was looking for a shampoo and soap/wash for my son.  I liked it so much that I started buying some products for myself.  By the way, the Naturally Nourishing Milk & Shea Butter Body Wash is divine!

Burt’s Bees developed the Radiance line of natural skin care products with Royal Jelly (nature’s most nourishing substance) to boost your skin’s natural glow. Here is a little more information about the product from the site and press release:

This natural, efficacious day lotion is specially formulated with Royal Jelly, the key ingredient across the Radiance line of products, to enhance skin’s natural radiance.  Royal Jelly is one of nature’s most nourishing substances and, as the exclusive diet of the Queen bee, the reason the Queen bee lives 40 times longer than worker bees.

With Calendula to soften and smooth skin and Golden Seal to nourish and provide vitamins A, C, E and B Complex, I really feel like this lotion is a therapeutic remedy for my skin.  The Royal Jelly just adds an additional level of nourishment with 17 amino acids and vitamins.  The lotion has this really light floral fragrance and it goes on very sheer (I can even wear liquid or powder makeup on top of it).  Once you rub the lotion on your face, you’ll barely notice it’s there (except for the light scent).  My skin really just felt more moisturized, rather than oily or greasy like many day lotions I’ve tried in the past.  As I get older it’s becoming more important for me to moisturize my face to avoid the little lines and wrinkles that seem to be appearing on a regular basis.  I love the fact that the lotion has an SPF of 15.  Did you know that it is recommended that everyone where sunscreen on a daily basis, even in the winter?  Skin cancer is rampant in this country.  I live in Southern California where it’s practically summer-like all year round so wearing sunscreen is a necessity.  Burt’s Bees uses natural Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide rather than chemical sunscreens to provide a physical layer of protection from the sun’s UVA/UVB rays.

I use products from the Burt’s Bees line because they are free from sulfates, parabens, phthalates, and petrochemicals.  I also value a company who discloses their products entire list of ingredients.  The company even goes so far as to give each product a rating as to how natural it is (usually above 90% with half of the products 100% natural).

The Radiance Day Lotion retails for $18.00 and is available for purchase directly on the site.  I also find that Target carries a ton of products from the Burt’s Bees line!

2/3 cup light brown sugar, packed (you can actually use any variety of sugar on the market today with the exception of powdered)
1/2 cup almond oil (any base oil will do)
5-10 drops essential or fragrance oil

Combine your oils in a bowl. Add the sugar and mix thoroughly. Store in a clean jar.
This potion will soften skin as it increases circulation. To use the exfoliating body scrub gently massage in circular motions over your entire body (excluding your face). Wash off in the shower or tub.
Voilá… ultra smooth, glowing skin!

This will leave the tub very slippery. All that oil is great for your body but can wreak havoc during the next shower. I give the tub a quick wipe down with a cleanser afterwards… (I admit, this doesn’t feel so “spa” like).
Note: Citrus oils should never be used on skin within 12 hours of sun exposure. This could result in burns or discolored sun spots.

Combine the dry ingredients, except the citric acid.
Add a few drops of your favorite fragrance to the almond oil.
Drizzle this over the mixed dry ingredients. Then you can add the citric acid.
Mix well and spritz with a little witch hazel. If you overdo the spritzing, the citric acid will start to fizz. Mist the mixture, work it in with your hands, and mist some more, about 10 minutes worth, alternating between the two techniques. When you can grab a glob in your hand and it stays together like dough, it’s ready.
Pack it into balls, or molds of your choice, whatever is handy and yields about 2 ounces.
Let them sit in the mold about 15 minutes. They pop out easily but be gentle because they can break at this point. Let them *age* 12 hours to 24 hours to get hard.
A sprinkle of a very fine glitter adds sparkle. When dry, wrap in net or tulle and tie with a ribbon.

It’s a New Year and a fresh beginning. We clink our glasses in a toast, play sentimental music and kiss our loved ones holding on tightly. Consequently, we make all kinds of outrageous promises in the heat of the
moment. We resolve to lose an exorbitant amount of weight, exercise daily like professional body builders, climb the highest rung on the ladder at work, do volunteer work, get more involved in our children’s schools and act more considerately to the in-laws. Yeah right! There is a huge interim from January to January. At the first sign of stress, we relapse into our old habits. But why can’t we implement? Is it because at the root
of our resolution lies the need to impress others?

Instead of raising your glass high, raise your personal status – immediately. Most of us need accountability and cheer leaders for a change to take hold. This year, how about becoming accountable to yourself? Instead of making resolutions on the spur of the moment, make a commitment to just one goal of self-improvement, for you and no one else. This means you are not losing weight because the media makes you feel fat or that you are doing volunteer work to make an impact on others with your kindness. This year’s special goal needs to emanate from your heart. Interesting, when your goal is internally driven, the accompanying perk is better health.

For example, many women are self-silencers. They do not speak up during a marital spat or ask the boss for a raise. Instead, at the first sign of conflict they tiptoe around the house or the office trying to keep the peace, suppressing their feelings and thoughts. Now if a self-silencer commits to expressing her true feelings, she will improve her health at the same time. The famous ten-year Framingham research study on
cardiovascular health discovered this striking fact: Women who kept their feelings to themselves during conflicts had a four times greater risk of dying than the rest of the population. At the very least they were more likely to suffer from depression and irritable bowel syndrome as summarized in the Harvard Women’s Health Watch (Jan., 2008). So, if you are a self-silencer, by making a commitment to expressing your truth in the coming year, you will create better health for both your mind and body as a bonus benefit.

To make sure that you stay committed to your new goal take a weekly inventory to evaluate what is working for you and what isn’t. This way you are avoiding the huge gap of January to January. Sunday night is a great time for evaluation as you are planning out your new week which gives you a weekly opportunity for a fresh start: Happy New Week!

I have a suggestion for this New Year’s – recreate the spirit of your Sweet Sixteen. Here’s a personal example, something I learned from my daughter when she celebrated this rite of passage with ten girlfriends. An hour before we had to leave for the restaurant, my daughter Amanda smiled demandingly, “I need a tiara and we have to get it now!” Thinking she wanted some designer jewelry head gear, I replied, “Who do you think you are, the Queen of England?” “Mom, it costs about $1.50 and you can get it at the party store.” “Oh well, in that case you can have two!” “And Mom, can you get some non-alcoholic champagne and some of those plastic fluted champagne glasses and serve it to my friends outside in the backyard when we return from the restaurant?” At that moment I realized that my daughter knew how to create, direct, get what she needs and have fun doing it. I had a lot to learn from her – and continue ever since.

As per her instructions, I greeted her friends with bubbling non-alcoholic champagne and my daughter made her appearance wearing her pink tiara laughing heartily as she greeted me. Then her eyes opened wide: I was wearing mine – remember I bought two!

Eye to eye, chromosomes recognizing chromosomes, my daughter reminded me to delight in being special – to revive the hidden girl within before I became a wife and a mother; in other words to leave the straight lines of personality. Wearing that tiara made me feel fresh and empowered like a goddess. And with all the giggling, highly energized teenage girls, I realized that I stood amidst a gang of goddesses.

It’s time to try on all kinds of “costumes,” to revive different parts of the self who have gone latent, but still exist. Let’s break the heart-deadening routine and celebrate our progress.
