How to Get a Better Night’s Sleep

A good night’s sleep can positively impact every part of your day. Getting plenty of restful, uninterrupted sleep the night before will help you feel more energized, motivated, aware and healthy. By the same token, lack of adequate sleep can cause you to feel sluggish, unmotivated, agitated and depressed, and it can lead to more serious health issues if sleep problems persist.

The world of today seems to be obsessed with productivity and fast-paced action. We feel obligated to work constantly toward self-improvement and career progress, while still trying to make time for a family and social life. Through all of this, simple necessities such as a decent amount of healthy sleep can easily be overlooked.

However, countless medical studies and articles have shown the importance of sleep and the fact that it impacts nearly every aspect of our physical and mental health. So if you are ready to be healthier and start taking some meaningful steps towards a better night’s sleep, read on for some helpful tips and information.

Regularity Matters

Humans are generally creatures of habit, and both our bodies and our minds crave regularity. In terms of sleep, your body has a built-in sleep-wake cycle that should be reinforced with consistency.

While most people do not have trouble sticking to the same sleep schedule throughout the week, it is easy to be tripped up on the weekend. Of course we all want to have fun, stay up a little later and sleep in a little longer on our off-days, but this can throw a big wrench into your body’s sleep-wake cycle. Even if you do stay up a little later on Saturday night, you should still try to wake up at the same time on Sunday morning.

The Right Mattress

Most people underestimate the importance of a good mattress. The mattress on which you sleep can impact every part of how your body feels the following morning. Many people who suffer from insomnia, back pain and other ailments could be significantly aided by sleeping on the right mattress every night.

Also, just because you bought an expensive, high-quality mattress does not mean that it is the right mattress for you. Factors such as your weight, body type and sleep preferences should all be taken into account when shopping for a new mattress. From innerspring to memory foam to adjustable air, there are tons of choices available for the right mattress, and you should take enough time to find which one suits you best.

Turning Off Your Brain

Even if you have perfected your individual sleep setting and schedule, it can still be difficult to turn your brain off when the lights go out. If you are unable to sleep for more than 20 minutes of lying in bed, you may need to get up and try some relaxing music or an activity that relaxes you. But if this is happening every night, it could be a sign of a bigger problem.

For instance, many people are worriers and have difficulty feeling secure at night. Even simple fixes like repeating a comforting mantra or installing a new security system could help. If this is the case, there are plenty of articles available on how to make a reliable DIY home security system, but the point is that you need to identify your own specific problem and what is troubling you at night before you can find a solution.
