Trend Micro Internet Security 2010 Review & Internet Safety Tips

Last month Trend Micro unveiled two new versions of its Internet Securityy products – Trend Micro™ Internet Security and Trend Micro Internet Security Pro, both the first to be optimized for Microsoft™ Windows™ 7. Both are now faster and smarter while remaining easy to use, they provide superior protection without draining computer resources.

We had the chance to review the new software and share our experiences with you. I have only tried a few different types of security software but so far the Trend Micro Internet Security software is pretty cool.

My favorite part is the Home Network Security Management function which allows you to see and remotely manage other computers in your home network through a graphical home network map and block wireless network intruders. To me this is a great feature because living in a college town, you see a lot of people using laptops and connecting to the internet by using someone else’s internet connection.

The Security Activity Dashboard also lets you view a customizable snapshot of all the security activities on your computers through easy-to-understand charts and graphs.

For those of you who travel and use your laptop or smartphone, I would recommend getting the Pro version because you also get a license for Mobile Security which protects smartphones against viruses, spam, data theft, service disruptions and other malware attacks.

Other features of Trend Micro Internet Security include:

• Automatically prevent suspicious software on USB drives from opening and installing itself on the computer.
• Analyze suspicious domain names and block attempts to open potentially dangerous Web sites.
• Rate the safety of hyperlink search results via search engines such as Biglobe™ (one of the largest Internet Service Providers in Japan), Infoseek™ and Bing™ on the Trend Micro Toolbar.
• Improved correlation via the Trend Micro Smart Protection Network – customers are part of a “neighborhood watch” system of protection that means greater security.

The software was easy to set up on our PC laptop. Once installed it automatically ran a virus check and updated the definition files. I didn’t really have any trouble, except when using the browser protection. While using that, when I would click on a link it would be a little slow at loading.

I was also invited to an online event where a Trend Micro Family Online Safety Expert gave some great tips on keeping you and your family safe while being online. A few tips they shared:

• Agree with your kids as to where, when, and for how long they will be on the Internet.
• Decide together on a list of sites or types of sites they can visit. Use content filtering as well.
• Advise your kids not to give our personal information, especially not to strangers, such as home address, phone numbers, credit card numbers, passwords, or their location. Use data protection features in security software if necessary.
• Ask them to treat other with respect online, just as they would in person.
• Advise them not to post comments or pictures that they wouldn’t want the whole world to see.
• Ask them to tell you if they come across anyone behaving badly online.
