I had never heard of Claim Jumper before.. after talking with some people about them I found out that they have quite a popular restaurant located throughout various states (Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin). And even though I live in Illinois, I still had never heard of them.. show’s how much I get out!
Since I’m always up for trying new things, especially things I’ve never heard of before, I was totally up for it when I was contacted about trying some of the Claim Jumper’s Frozen Dinners. I’m not a big fan of frozen dinners, a lot of the ones I’ve tried didn’t have much taste or flavor to them so I was a little unsure of how the Claim Jumper’s would turn out. Needless to say I expected the same old t.v. dinner setup with the same bland taste.

We had the opportunity to try their new pasta dishes: Chicken and Penne a la Vodka, Chicken and Shrimp Penne Rustica, Shrimp Scampi, Cheese Ravioli Parmigiana, and Chicken Marsala.
The first dinner I tried was the Chicken Marsala. This dinner didn’t have any vegetables but the serving is a pretty good portion of food. It was enough to fill me up and not leave me feeling stuffed. Both the chicken and the noodles cooked up very nicely in the microwave, both were tender and not chewy at all. It was quite good.
Up next was the Chicken and Shrimp Penne Rustica and the Shrimp Scampi. Now, I don’t eat shrimp or any kind of sea food, so my husband was the tester for these. Both of these dinners came with a side of vegetables. With these dinners the directions tell you to add 1 tablespoon of water to the vegetables which helps them from drying out. My husband said they were very good for tv dinner vegetables and that they stayed tender through the cooking process. He commented that they were a little bland but he just added some salt and pepper and said that did the trick. (I did have to try some of the noodles from the Shrimp Scampi because it smelled wonderful when it finished cooking. It tasted even better.. kinda like buttery heaven!
The others we received we thought we’d try in the oven so I’ll keep you posted
I was really impressed how the dinners turned out. These are definitely the best microwavable dinners I’ve had and will definitely get more for quick dinners. I also like how some of them come with vegetables to balance out the meal and don’t taste bland.. they’re full of flavor. Total cook time was about 5 minutes (in the microwave) so it’s perfect for moms, or anyone, on the go.
My husband enjoyed the meals and asked where we could get more.. he was quite happy to find out that we could get them at Walmart where we do the rest of our shopping. Claim Jumper dinners are readily available in grocery stores nationwide, and affordably priced from $3.29 to $7.99. They can be cooked in the microwave or even in the oven.

I tried them several months ago here in Kansas. It was the chicken fried steak that was on sale for $2 each and it was really, really, really yummy.

I have eaten at the Claim Jumper’s restaurants in California and truly enjoyed their meals. Atmosphere great, service great. So I was looking forward to sampling the frozen meals. I tried the meatloaf dinner and the Shrimp Scampi. I was disappointed with both of them. The meatloaf was not very tasty and the SCampi noodles were basically swimming in soup. Vegetables on both meals were tasteless. Needless to say, I won’t be purchasing any more of the frozen meals.
$3.29-$7.99 is not an affordable price to pay for a microwave dinner especially the way these taste. I just had the meatloaf and there’s definitely something missing. These are not simple to make either. It’s a 4 step process which takes about 10 mins total. We bought 5 for $10 from Kroger(originally 4.65 a piece!). If I am going to spend close to $5 on a dinner and want it quick, I’d rather drive down the road to Sonic. I’m sure the calorie content would be about the same. Marie Callendar’s dinners are much tastier at a much better price.
The meals are very good however I don’t like my Salisbury Steak dumped on top of the mac and cheese. Also, broccoli is a rather delicate veggie to survive the necessary cooking needed to heat the rest of the dinner. Their space saving packages saves them money but detracts from the product. Hence, I will be buying another brand.
