Baby Names and Their Meanings

May 7, 2009

Baby names are such a fascination to me. I always wonder what the special meaning is behind some of the names I have come across. I know there is the traditional way of using the grandfathers’ first name as the child’s middle name. I used an Old Spanish tradition of using the mother’s maiden name for the middle name. Of course we all know of some not so traditional methods that are fun to play with, but usually do not bear decent names. Or it could be that from the time you were little, you already had the names of your children picked out. Some people just seem to be born knowing the name of their children!

But what about the true meaning of names? This factor is important to some new parents. I grew up in a Catholic home so most of the names of my siblings and me come from the Bible. These are mainly used for the middle names, but that is not always the case. You may prefer using your heritage as a stepping-stone. Going back in your family ancestry could give you some great ideas. Maybe you have some German or English in your background; or how about a little luck of the Irish? I have heard of some people choosing a name just by the meaning of it, believing that by doing so their child will grow up being or doing exactly that. Alexander means “Defender of men”. I see a future General in a name like that! Felicia’s are said to be “Happy”. Who doesn’t love a happy kid?

What about the people who want a more unique way of choosing a name. Take the actual name meanings from the parents’ names and try to put together a first and middle name. Who knows a Dawn and Ed? Sunrise Wealth Protector? Now trust me when I say “wealth protector” could be a challenge, but a unique name could be the end result. Mixing and matching names is a great way to come up with the perfect one. I can definitely see where some fun could come into this, especially for new parents. Who knows, maybe you’ll start a family tradition to last generations! I almost wish I had thought of that during my first pregnancy, but now I am hoping the mother’s maiden name thing will catch on.

  2. I am also very interested in baby names, but also my genealogy. I come from a long line of family names. We are all named after someone, and I plan to do the same with my children. :o ) Neat post!
