One of the most important things to me as a new mother was making sure I got my daughter on a good sleeping schedule. I am a morning person and didn’t want to have to adjust my schedule around my daughter. Ever since she was around four months old, I always made it a point to have her in bed by eight ‘o clock to encourage her to be up at a normal time in the morning. Of course when she was an infant there were nighttime feedings that she had to wake up for, but I slowly introduced dream feeding, eventually eliminating them all together and by the time she was nine months old we had the sleeping schedule perfected, down by eight, up by seven. This lasted about six more months.
Then to my surprise, I found out that children’s sleeping patterns change as they grow. Before I knew it my perfect plan blew up in my face. My daughter was now going to sleep at 8pm, waking up at 1am – fully waking up – going back down at around 5am and then sleeping until 10am. This was definitely not working out for me! I worked hard, again, at getting her back on schedule and finally got it to work when she was around 18 months. Now even though she was sleeping through the night again, she was waking up around 5 or 6am – whenever the sun would rise. I may have said I was a morning person, but not that early! Even on the days that I do wake up earlier, I like to have some alone time to shower, get dressed, not be a mom for an hour or two…you know?
When I found out about The Good Nite Lite, it seemed like the perfect solution for this scheduled family! Not only would it help out in the morning, but it might eliminate some nighttime tantrums when eight ‘o clock came rolling around.
The Good Nite Lite is…
“Good Nite Lite is a new behavioral modification device that encourages children to learn healthy and acceptable sleeping habits.”
Simply put, it is a nightlight that you can set a timer to so that at your child’s bedtime a friendly “moon” appears and in the morning the “sun” comes out. My daughter immediately fell in love with the Good Nite Lite! I plugged it in around 5 p.m. and told her that when it was time for “night night” that the moon would come to remind her. At 8:00 pm on the dot, the moon was glowing and she was more than receptive. She ran into the living room and said “Mom, it’s time to go night night, the moon is here!” No fighting! I was impressed! I told her that in the morning the sun would come to let her know it was time to get up. I had set the morning timer for 8:00 a.m. which was a bit later than her normal time to wake up but I couldn’t resist. Do you know that she sat quietly in her bed until the sun came on?? I even had to peek in her room to make sure she was ok because I just couldn’t believe that she hadn’t woken up yet.
When I spoke to the creator of The Good Nite Lite, Adam Nelson, he advised me that it might take a few days for the concept to soak in, but I have to disagree, the change was immediate! We have been using The Good Nite Lite for about 3 weeks now and every single night so far we have had the same response, my daughter sees the moon, she hops into bed. No joke! I don’t think this would have happened using any other method at least until she was old enough to tell time.
I definitely recommend The Good Nite Lite to anyone who is having problems creating a daily bedtime routine. I think two years old would be the ideal age to start using the product probably until around the age that they can read a standard clock. Although, the device itself would be a good nightlight for any age and since it’s on a timer, you will be saving energy as well.

The only negative thing I found with this product is that you cannot rotate the entire “face” of it. My outlets in my daughters bedroom were installed horizontally and because if this, the nightlight is also “sideways”. However, this did not effect the purpose of The Good Nite Lite whatsoever and until we re-install the outlets, we are fine with the sideways moon!
From the site -
“Parents simply pre-set a certain period of time for sleeping, one that blends with the family schedule. When the pre-set “bedtime” arrives, parents show the child the Good Nite Lite, which turns from a cheerful Sun caricature to a peaceful Moon caricature. In the morning, the Moon changes back to the Sun at the pre-set time, demonstrating to children the acceptable time to get out of bed and start the day – even if the natural sun is shining bright.”
