DVD Review: Girls Rock – The Movie

February 25, 2009

I was given the opportunity to review this new DVD documentary from Liberation Entertainment called Girls Rock The Movie.

When we first put in the DVD, I wasn’t exactly sure how we were going to like it. I was afraid it would look like someone had thrown together a movie in their basement or something. I thought it might end up being some cheesy movie that neither of my kids would like.

But, let me tell you that I was completely wrong in my assumptions.

The story of the real camp rock will capture your hearts just as they captured ours. From the beginning of the movie I was captivated by the stories of the girls who were being followed in the documentary. It was so awesome to see the girls after they had been at camp, begin to let down their guards and stop pretending to be someone they weren’t.

At the camp they are encouraged to stop being good little girls and just embrace who they really are even if someone may not approve. The girls ages 8-18 are given a week to form bands and put together a performance before an audience of 750 people.

You can probably imagine the drama and frustration that occurs. But it is in situations like these that the girls are able to learn and grow. It was awesome to see the growth of the girls who were featured in this movie. Although each girl had her own story, they all were dealing with similar core issues of rejection in one form or another. But during camp they learned to love themselves. And even if the world may not accept them as they are, they are beautiful people, and that is powerful to watch. You could see the transformation in the girls with your own eyes.

In a world where girls are constantly being bombarded with negative unrealistic expectations about how they should look and act, it is nice to see that there is a place where they can be themselves and not feel ashamed of the fact that they are not living Bratz dolls, but real people of substance.

My fifteen year old daughter said that after she watched the DVD it made her wish she could go to the camp too. The stories were so real and she was able to relate to a lot of the same issues the girls were dealing with.

Here is a video clip of Girls Rock the Movie.

“At Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp, girls ranging in age from eight to 18 are taught that it’s
OK to sweat like a pig, scream like a banshee, wail on their instruments with
complete and utter abandon, and that “it is 100% okay to be exactly who you
are.”

You can purchase your own copy of Girls Rock! from Amazon.
