Etsy: Meet the Maker of “Wash When Dirty”

December 6, 2008

I’ve had the chance to meet so many new etsy sellers lately and would like to take this opportunity to share them with Mom Fuse readers. Each week I will be featuring a new etsy shop and give everyone a chance to “meet the maker”. Understand why they do what they do and hopefully they can inspire us with their stories. So let’s start with – Wash When Dirty

Meet The Maker

Hello! I’m Kristina and although I’m not a mom (yet), I am an auntie to many sweet little angels. I’ve always been in love with fabrics, yarns, up-cycling and re-purposing projects, and vintage hunts at local thrift stores, estate sales, and attics. My mom taught me how to knit, sew and crochet when i was just a wee-bit. She used to make our clothes and things around our house. If you meet me for coffee, you’ll probably soon notice that while i’m talking to you, my hand is busy doodling bags, sketching up patterns or playing around with quilt compositions. My process usually starts with those doodles, then when 3 questions come to mind when it’s time to translate them in an actual bag, quilt or what nots (i love making things for the house too, you know great pillows to brighten up your house, little kitchen towels that makes you want to be in the kitchen lol, aprons that you can host a party in or just enjoy while cooking…to illustrate a few) The three facts come to mind:
- How will it look aesthetically speaking? It will need to be cute and great to look at. Something that
will make one smile when you glance at it
- It has to be simple! simplicity and easy care are very important to me. I used to be a busy student, who
didn’t just want the generic black bag for my laptop, but at the same time i didn’t want something that
required too much fussing over. So that’s why, I make things that are easy to take care of. You spill somethingon a bag, it’s okay! It’s not ruined, all you need to do is pop it the laundry and it will be good to go.
- Is it functional? I like the versatility of things. How a bag could be your gym bag today, as well as it could
be your errand/grocery or laptop bag tomorrow. And this part has become more apparent as some of my friends became moms.

You’re a girl, you like cute things and nice things, and just because you have to carry a diaper bag for the sweet little ones need doesn’t mean that i ought not to be great to look at as well as easy to use for you too. You’ll still need to find your keys, wallets ect…amongst toys, blankets, and diaper wipes. In addition to these 3 things, i’m always looking for ways to up-cycle and re-purpose raw materials. Finding ways to re-use things that are around the house that might usually translate as trash, such as rice bags, little fabric remnants, plastic bags ect…I believe that just because you aspire to live a more “green” and earth friendly lifestyle doesn’t mean that you need to shell out major cash, which often is the case. I’ve been thinking of what direction my site: washwhendirty.com would be heading toward with the new year knocking fast. I would love to incorporate more tutorials, DIY projects, up-cycling and re-purposing ideas, along with some tips about economically friendly ways to live a more “green” and earth aware lifestyle.  Learn more about Kristina HERE!
